[Once gain, Simon sends his monkey courier to draw Yomiel aside for a quick chat before curfew.]

I think today went well. You and Paul were both super convincing. I almost believed you myself!

Buuuut... just in case. Is there anything you'd like to tell me while we have the chance? I'm pretty curious how things went with Miss Rin.

Getting anything out of that girl is like pulling teeth. But I do have something for you. Here.

[ Yomiel pulls a small, folded-up piece of paper from his jacket's inner pocket and hands it over. ]

I used up the normal way to prove your role, so here's a back-up. Consider it a little bit of insurance in case the plan doesn't pay off.

[ Simon can open it up now or read it later, but the note reads, in somewhat messy handwriting:
"Simon is the real Troubleshooter. He can be trusted.
-Yomiel" ]

[He does open it up, checking it out before carefully re-folding it and putting it into his own pocket.]

Maybe they'll go after Rin tonight? If she's telling the truth, she's really dangerous to them.

If they do, that would be pretty convenient for us. It's not like she's being very helpful to begin with. But it's also possible that the game's set up to let her join their meetings so she can play double agent more effectively. If she's "helping" them as much as she's "helping" us, they might let her stick around.

[ He shakes his head. ]

We've done everything we can to influence their decision at this point. Without a Defense Officer, there's no point left in trying to guess who they go after. We can't stop it. All that's left is to prepare for the worst case scenario and pray, if you're the type.

[ Going by the way he says it, Yomiel himself is not the type. ]

I can't say I am. "Two hands working," and all that. But we all did our best.

Do you think he's trustworthy? Paul, I mean.

Yeah, I think so. The kid's smart for his age, but he's still a brat. If he wasn't on our side, he wouldn't do such a good job of hiding it.

It's not like I told him the whole plan, anyway. As far as he knows, I really am the real Troubleshooter. I don't think he suspects a thing about what really happened out there.

Whoa, seriously? You're an even smoother operator than I expected!

But I'm glad to hear it. If he's still around tomorrow, maybe Horace or I can make friends with him.

Right. Getting a united front together of people we can trust is a good idea. If we can swing a majority before we even get into the Loyalty Chamber, that would be ideal. The Communists tried to frame Phi, so she's likely safe, and I think Mukuro Ikusaba is, too. Add in you, me, Knightley, Paul, and Clay Puppington, that makes seven. If we're lucky enough that somebody outside that group dies tomorrow morning, that'll make a majority, barely.

If we can get them to all vote together. Knightley and I have our eyes on Detective Fulbright for tomorrow's trial. The argument against him's a strong one, but going forward, that's not always going to be the case.

Why Mukuro? Because she's so clueless?

Heh. Basically. Specifically, she's clueless about when I get my results. I don't get anything until after we wake up in the morning, and the Scanner probably works the same way. If it didn't, the Communists could just scan and kill in the same night. It's not the strongest evidence, but it's the kind of thing that would slip out if you weren't paying careful attention.

That makes sense. And I'm all for assembling, too.

Oh — and I hate to ask, but does anybody else have a note like this? Or not even necessarily that, but um... is there a sample to compare the handwriting to?

Yeah. There'll be a letter in my room for everyone to find. It'll have my results and some general advice in it. Your identity and the details of our plan today, I'm leaving that all up to you to share. All the letter says is I gave you a note to identify yourself with, if you so choose.

I already promised Knightley I'd keep you safe [ or gave him permission to break both his arms if something happened, close enough ], but to be perfectly honest, you're probably going to be better at doing that than I am. [ Dunno if you've noticed, Simon, but "people Yomiel likes" is not a group with a great survival rate around here. ]

Sorry about him. That's just the way he is.

[ Yomiel shrugs casually. ]

I don't mind. I think I'd be more worried if he wasn't concerned. It's a dangerous situation we've found ourselves in.

Well, I know it was risky. But I'm only really in trouble if they scan me, right? And that would have been the same whether I helped you or not. I don't think I've given them any reason to scan me, except for...

[He actually trembles a little at this one.]

...Officer Fulbright.

[He bites his lip and glances away.]

Because it's personal, and because both you and Horace already suspect him.

[ It's like he said earlier, it's not like there's anything he can do about it at this point. ]

[Should he have said something sooner? But what good would it have done him? It's not like he could trust either one of them to drop more concrete leads for the detective without admitting why he was worried about the guy. Even if he did admit it. No, he couldn't have said anything then and maybe shouldn't have said anything now. Fulbright is a loose end he can take care of tomorrow.]
