Character (Original Universe)
Name: Simon Keyes
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Canon: Ace Attorney
Canon Point: Post-AAI2
History: Wiki link (note that it uses the Japanese names whereas I use the ones from the fan translation)
Personality: Keyes presents himself as a timid, cowardly, self-deprecating sort of man. He slumps to hide his full height, dresses like a teenage girl, and wears his hair in pigtails. He's an animal trainer with the circus, and yet the little monkey that accompanies him seems to be the one calling the shots, taking him by the hair and moving him around like a marionette. All-in-all, a weak and useless sort of guy.
But actually, this persona is almost entirely phony. His true form is that of an evil Disney princess clown. Please view this informative gif for a helpful illustration of the concept.
When Simon Keyes finally reveals his true colors, his attitude completely changes. He becomes aggressive and mocking. The true Keyes is a harsh, sarcastic sort of man who takes pleasure in tearing down the over-confident and successful. His bad behavior is born out of a vicious hatred for the people who ruined his life when he was a child, and there is even a note of self-righteousness to the vengeance he doles out against his enemies.
Basically, he's one of those chessmaster villain types (actual chess-playing included). Not only is he in complete control of the circus animals he spends a decent chunk of the game pretending to be afraid of, but he manipulates the people around him as well, guiding them toward their destruction. Keyes is referred to as the "Mastermind" due to his tendencies to play entire groups of people through anonymous means, using letters, voice changers, and knockout drugs to erase his presence from the crimes he instigates. His MO is to turn two people he hates against each other until one of them is killed, then personally ensure the other is caught by the law.
Now, despite all this, Keyes isn't mindlessly or arbitrarily horrible. He has a very specific list of enemies that he needs to ruin, and the majority of them are genuinely awful people. But of course, his actions are hardly laudable either, and he shows not a shred of guilt or remorse for the many innocents caught up in his schemes who end up injured or worse. He might act like he's doing justice, but the only thing Simon Keyes truly believes in or cares about is Simon Keyes.
While Keyes is definitely angry and ruthless, he's not hot-headed, preferring to bide his time until the moment is right, even waiting years to set revenge plans into motion. He doesn't even need his victims to know he was the one who caused their downfall; in fact, for all the chaos and death he causes throughout the course of the game, he only gets his own hands dirty once, at a point where he has very little choice in the matter. This isn't because he's squeamish or anything like that, but simply because it's safer for him to stay away from anything that might link him to murders. It's important (and fun!) to destroy his enemies as thoroughly as possible, but the most important thing to Keyes is protecting himself.
And protect himself he does, to a paranoid degree; in fact, Keyes's lack of faith in others is so strong that he sets up his best (and only) friend of 18 years for betraying his trust exactly once, when they were six years old, despite implications that the guy has had a pretty spotless track record since then. To Keyes's credit, this seems to be the only death in the entire game he has an ounce of remorse about, but he still defends the action as having been justified. He truly believes that the only way to survive is to hurt others before they can hurt you, and "friends" are simply in a better position to hurt you the most deeply.
Third-Person Sample: It isn't long before Simon has his assigned moogle snuggled up in his lap for behind-the-antenna (he thinks that's an antenna?) scritching. That's a good sign for their working relationship; if he must be saddled with a talking, stalking, record-keeping little spy, at least it's one that's easy to handle.
"You are soooo cute," he says, and it's true. The little bastard is completely adorable. He's thinking about getting it a nice little jacket to wear, maybe dyeing its fur. He's pretty sure he can talk it into that. He still hasn't picked out the color.
"Kupooo," it murmurs contentedly. Yeah, he gets the feeling he could talk it into just about anything right now.
So this is fine. He can work with this. He'll play the part of the 'hero' and make sure it has nothing but nice things get written in that diary it insists on keeping. It's not ideal, but he's passed under stricter (and certainly less adorable) scrutiny before.
Pink and black? Those seem like good colors for a weird, flying teddy bear. Red and purple? He doesn't have to decide now. Maybe he'll get it a little cape and top hat...
Mognet Sample:
Hi, Heroes! I'm new here and I was just wondering, where's a good place to get outfits for your moogles? Maybe also outfits for people, too? They don't have to match, but it would be good if they matched? Matching would really be the ideal here. Some dye might be nice, too...
Anyway, I'm not really sure what they meant by "Hero" or "Light" so I've been putting together a super basic act, with like some juggling and whatever, but I'm still pretty green as a performer! If somebody has a more professional show and needs an opener or even better yet, a stagehand, please send me a message! I'm definitely not ready to do this on my own!!
♥ Thanks so much! ♥
